AntiVira Av is a scam. AntiVira Av was created as a rogue anti-virus program in order to defraud you, so the first and most important thing to know about it is that AntiVira Av is up to no good. In fact, AntiVira Av is just one member of a growing family of nearly identical rogue anti-virus applications, which are malware infections that try to scare you into thinking that your computer has viruses that only these applications can remove. Some of these other rogue anti-virus applications are Antivirus. NET, Security Shield 2010, System Tool 2011, Palladium Pro, WindowsScan, Windows Disk, andSpyware Protection 2010. Every few months, there is a new version of this same old threat, with a new name. AntiVira Av is the version of this malware that appeared in February 2010. Its clumsy-sounding name is just two words that would normally inspire confidence or suggest anti-virus capabilities, thrown together.

Like all its slimy little siblings, AntiVira Av originated in Russia, and has always used Trojans to worm its way into systems. While it is possible to download the rogue program from a website that offers a “free scan,” it is more common for the Trojan responsible for AntiVira Av infections to be hidden in, or bundled with, a file that you would normally download without thinking twice. Then the Trojan makes sure that AntiVira Av gets installed, a few settings are changed, and the next time you start Windows, it is there and offers an “easy one-click registration” of its bogus product.

If AntiVira Av is present on your computer, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • AntiVira Av's fake home screen opens at Windows Start, showing the status of program components and claiming that the version of AntiVira Av that you have is a demo or trial, and you need to pay for the software and activate it.

  • Pop-up warnings about viruses and remote attacks, which come from the system tray, and always recommend activating or purchasing AntiVira Av software.

  • AntiVira Av warns you that your real anti-virus software is infected and recommends that you remove it.

  • AntiVira Av may prevent other programs and services from running, including Task Manager.

  • AntiVira Av may prevent Internet Explorer from accessing security-related websites.

  • If the RootkitTDSS is also present (which it can be, with AntiVira Av), you may also find that your searches on the major search engine sites get redirected to malicious websites.

As you might expect, because of all of the different things that it does, AntiVira Av can consume a lot of memory. It can actually consume enough to make your computer run considerably slower than normal. This can benefit AntiVira Av by helping to make it look like AntiVira Av's warnings about infections were accurate, since system performance will be negatively affected.

AntiVira Av is malicious software created by people who have decided to do you harm in order to get some money. Part of the scam is AntiVira Av's constant effort to keep you from having control over your computer, and to try to convince you that paying money for AntiVira Av's nonexistent protection will make the unpleasantness stop. It will not. AntiVira Av is malicious and has nothing to offer, but you can regain control over the situation.
