Privacy Center is a rogue security program, which claims to be able to protect your computer from viruses and spyware, but which is itself malware. In other words, Privacy Center is a scam and should not be trusted with your computer's security or your money.

What You Need to Know About Privacy Center

As a rule of thumb, you should be suspicious of any software that suddenly shows up on your computer without you installing it. In Privacy Center's case, this rule absolutely holds true, because Privacy Center is installed by a Trojan. In particular, Privacy Center can be installed by both Vundo (aka Virtumonde, Virtumundo) and Zlob, both of which are especially dangerous and capable of doing serious damage. Infections of Privacy Center began in March 2009, and historically, the Trojans responsible have been reported to hide themselves in video codecs and flash updates. Adult or illicit websites have a much higher incidence of these infected codecs. Privacy Center is also very similar to another rogue security program called Privacy Components, which was likely created by the same scam artists.

When Privacy Center is downloaded to your computer by a Trojan, the first thing you will notice is that the next time you start Windows, you see a bogus Privacy Center home screen. This is because Privacy Center changes settings in order to make sure that it runs whenever Windows starts. The fake home screen will have several different icons for different things that Privacy Center claims to be able to do, and the screen will look pretty realistic. Remember, making a good-looking window is easy, especially if you do not create any functionality behind the icons and menus.

Privacy Center will bombard you with falsified "scan" results and pop-up security warnings, always claiming that your computer is threatened by some kind of dangerous parasite. These warnings are accompanied by statements that your computer is at risk because you are only running the trial version of Privacy Center, and in order to remove the parasites, you must pay for the "full" version. If you fall for this, there is a payment screen where you really can give the con-artists your credit card number, and they really will charge you – but there is no full version of Privacy Center. There is nothing more to Privacy Center than you have already seen; it's all meant to scare you into forking over your money. What you see is what you get.

Other Potential Issues Created By Privacy Center

While Privacy Center launches its campaign of scare tactics, it will devour a lot of system resources, and can cause your computer to run slowly. Privacy Center also is able to hijack your web browser and redirect you to malicious websites. Those malicious sites can host other malware, which means that Privacy Center's activities may make your computer increasingly vulnerable over time.

Do not give in to Privacy Center's scare tactics! You can get rid of Privacy Center, and you can regain control of your computer without paying the people who hoped to make you a victim of their fraud.
